Hands-on: Half-Life 2 with RTX-powered graphics looks gorgeous
Valve's Half-Life 2 is still a wonderful milestone of PC gaming more than 20 years after its original release, but it recently got its dated visuals pumped up with a mod that lets you flex the power of a cutting-edge graphics card. In a video sponsored by Nvidia, PCWorld's Adam goes through the new ray tracing and graphical enhancements and talks with the developers who implemented them. Half-Life 2 RTX is a free upgrade if you already own the original (and after a million Steam sales, who doesn't?), though you won't get all the enhanced goodies unless you're lucky enough to have an RTX 50-series card. We're talking ray tracing and path tracing for incredible lighting, plus new in-game assets with more polygons and better textures so you have something nice for those rays to bounce off. Naturally, this is going to make your gaming PC sweat a little more than the unmodified 20-year-old game.
A demo of Half-Life 2 RTX arrives next week on Steam
First announced back in 2023, NVIDIA is finally releasing a playable demo for Half-Life 2 RTX. If you own the original game on Steam (and if you don't, what's your excuse?), you can download the preview on March 18. The showcase will allow players to see how Orbifold Studios has reimagined Ravenholm and Nova Prospekt with ray tracing. NVIDIA says the full release will arrive "at a later date." Ahead of the demo's release, NVIDIA is also releasing RTX Remix, the modding toolkit Orbifold used to remaster HL2, to the public.
Viktor Antonov, art director for Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has died, according to colleagues
Viktor Antonov, best known for his work as art lead on Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, has reportedly died at age 52. Half-Life writer Marc Laidlaw broke the news in an Instagram Story, and other colleagues have since taken to social media to pay tribute as well. "I didn't want to say much till I felt it was confirmed, but I learned today that Viktor Antonov, our visionary art lead on HL2, has died," Laidla wrote in the now-expired post, which was reshared by LambdaGeneration on Saturday night. Antonov got his start in video games working on Redneck Rampage, and in addition to serving as art director for Half-Life 2 and Dishonored, he went on to consult on titles including Doom (2016) and Fallout 4. The Bulgarian artist just recently appeared in a documentary celebrating the 20th anniversary of Half-life 2 this past November. I wish I told you how much admiration I had for you but we get caught in our lives until a surprise like this hits us," Raphael Colantonio, founder of Arkane Studios and Wolfeye Studios, wrote on Bluesky. "You were instrumental to the success of Arkane Studios and an inspiration to many of us, also a friend with whom I have many fond memories." In another post, game designer Harvey Smith added, "All this about his impact and talent is true, but I will also always remember how much he made me laugh, with his dry, devastating wit.
From Astro Bot to Balatro, the 2024 'game of the year' race is too close to call
Much like Christmas is a lot less enjoyable for the person who has to organise all the presents and cook the dinner, game-of-the-year season is rather intimidating for the people who have to put together the shortlists. Every November, I tot up all of the year's acclaimed games I've yet to play, the underground recommendations I've yet to follow up on and the games I loved back in February but forgot about. I feel a mounting panic. And when all of the year-end lists come out, I inevitably find I've missed something anyway. The Game Awards have just announced the nominations for this year's ceremony, taking place on 12 December in Los Angeles.

I wish Blizzard loved Warcraft as much as I do
Blizzard's first real-time strategy games had a profound impact on me as a young immigrant to Canada in 1994 and '95. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness helped me learn how to read and write in English, and formed the basis for some of my oldest friendships in a brand-new country. Suffice to say, I have a lot of love for these old RTS games -- maybe more than Blizzard itself. So you can imagine my excitement at remaster rumors for Warcraft II and its expansion, Beyond the Dark Portal. When Blizzard aired its Warcraft Direct last week, not only were those rumors confirmed, but it announced that the original Warcraft would receive the same treatment, and both would be sold alongside Warcraft III: Reforged (itself a remaster) as part of a new battle chest.
Valve celebrates Half-Life 2's 20th anniversary with a big update
It's Half-Life 2's 20th anniversary, and in celebration, Valve has released a special update that adds the Episode One and Episode Two expansions to the base game so you can play it all straight through, along with a two-hour documentary, developer commentary, and much more. The game is also free on Steam until November 18. Valve's announcement itself is an interactive experience -- grab the gravity gun at the bottom of the page and you can pick up just about anything on the screen and toss it around (including that can, which you can then put in the trash). "Every map in Half-Life 2 has been looked over by Valve level designers to fix longstanding bugs, restore content and features lost to time, and improve the quality of a few things like lightmap resolution and fog," the team says. The release notes are extensive, including updates to the graphics settings, gamepad controls and the Steam Deck menu. Valve's also published some old demo videos from Half-Life 2's development.
'We don't go to Ravenholm': the story behind Half-Life 2's most iconic level
At the start of Valve's Half-Life 2, the seminal first-person shooter game that turns 20 this month, taciturn scientist Gordon Freeman is trapped within a dystopian cityscape. Armed soldiers patrol the streets, and innocent citizens wander around in a daze, bereft of purpose and future. Dr Wallace Breen, Freeman's former boss at the scientific "research centre" Black Mesa, looks down from giant video screens, espousing the virtues of humankind's benefactors, an alien race known as The Combine. As Freeman stumbles through these first few levels of Half-Life 2, the player acclimatises to the horrible future laid out before them. It's hardly the most cheerful setting, but there are some friendly faces (security guard Barney, Alyx and Eli Vance) and even moments of humour, as Dr Isaac Kleiner's pet, a debeaked face-eating alien called Lamarr, runs amok in his laboratory.
Here's a fresh look at the Half-Life 2 RTX remaster
We initially heard about a team modding an RTX remaster of Half-Life 2 last August. Today, NVIDIA released a trailer giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at Orbifold Studios' efforts to apply more modern graphics tools to the iconic title. The video highlights the RTX Remix engine and how the team is using it to make visual upgrades to a game with an engine two decades old. They have examples of how they're creating more dynamic light sources, volumetric fog in moody areas, and full 3D detail on the objects in the environment. The crew at Orbifold still doesn't have a release date for their work, but as the 20th anniversary for Half-Life 2 approaches on November 16, it's possible that there may be something official in the works from Valve.
Steam defined the modern video game industry
Gather'round, children, and let me tell you a story about the old bugaboo we used to call DRM. Digital Rights Management was the beast under every gamer's bed in the mid-2000s, an invisible bit of software baked into game discs that dictated and tracked player behavior under the guise of preventing piracy. DRM software, like SecuROM, limited the times a game could be downloaded and forced players to regularly connect to the internet for authentication checks, at a time when less than half of American adults had reliable broadband connections. DRM features soured the releases of BioShock, Mass Effect and Spore, and by 2010, anti-piracy software had rendered Assassin's Creed 2 and Splinter-Cell: Conviction unplayable. When Microsoft attempted to release the Xbox One with always-on DRM features in 2013, intense vitriol from fans forced the company to reverse its plans at the 11th hour.
The Morning After: Atari's new miniature console plays 2600 and 7800 game carts
Atari is launching another retro home console, after its last effort. The Atari 2600 pays homage to the original Atari 2600, launched in 1977, but this remake echoes the four-switch model from 1980. The console has been "lovingly recreated to the same specifications as the original" but is only 80 percent of its size. The console's plus features are the HDMI output and widescreen support. It'll have 10 titles in the box, but Atari die-hards will want to track down physical cartridges if they want to play the big hits of the era, like Pac-Man or Pitfall!
